Gig Review: Eliot Sumner

By: Sarah Hardy

Eliot Sumner is the laid back definition of ‘cool as fuck’ – bare faced androgyny with kick-ass bass and a voice that warmly grazes the eardrums with dark tales of lost love and obsession. Long gone are the awkward heels, painted face and cute nickname that conjured up former band moniker I Blame Coco. Sumner has come into her own, and she rocks.

‘Come Friday’ was the opener for a Thursday at Birthdays in Dalston, and the packed crowd celebrated her arrival in time to the boisterous, guitar-driven track, followed by a set that combined I Blame Coco favourites with those from her recent Information EP, plus a few new ones to boot.

Title track ‘Information’ came mid set, with pulsing beat adding heavy sentiment to the bold synth-and-strings song of infinite yearning, described as a break-up song by Sumner – “It’s about not understanding the situation. With social networks these days, everyone needs to know everything, all the time. It’s about a quest to know everything.”

Sumner closed her set at Birthdays with the brilliant synth-pop track ‘Self Machine’, from I Blame Coco album – The Constant.

Set List Come Friday · Follow You Back Home · Let Your Love · Information · After Dark · Wobbler · What Good · Halfway To Hell · The Constant · Self Machine
