Exclusive Interview; Sitting Down with Sunset Sons

By: Dominic Brady & Danny Judge

Sunset Sons are definitely a band on the rise. A band formed by four friends united through a love of surfing and snowboarding, the band is made up of three Brits and one Aussie; Rory (vocals and keys), Jed (drums), Pete (bass) and Rob (guitar), all determined on having fun on tour and putting on electrifying live shows. Although they’re based in the French surf town of Hossegor, it would be an error of terrific proportions to view the band as merely a collection of beach rats who like to make music on the side. The band’s relentless performing is testament to their work ethic and it seems their hard work is beginning to pay off as they have worked their way into the mainstream with hits like Medicine and Remember. The release of their latest EP She Wants has seen them embark on an extensive tour of European festivals and it seems that Sunset Sons are beginning to achieve their dream. We caught up with them before their headline show at the House of Vans 1st birthday party to sit down and talk about the release of their new EP, playing Glastonbury, and living the surfing lifestyle.

Although they're based in the French surf town of Hossegor, it would be an error of terrific proportions to view the band as merely a collection of beach rats who like to make music on the side. The band’s relentless performing is testament to their work ethic and it seems their hard work is beginning to pay off as they have worked their way into the mainstream with hits like 'Medicine' and 'Remember'. The release of their latest EP, She Wants, has seen them embark on an extensive tour of European festivals and it seems that Sunset Sons are beginning to achieve their dream. Following on from our preview of their new track 'She Wants' here, we caught up with them before their headline show at the House of Vans 1st birthday party to sit down and talk about the release of their new EP, playing Glastonbury, and living the surfing lifestyle.

“We’re really happy with the She Wants EP! The title track is an old classic of ours, as it’s the second song we ever wrote. We’ve been playing it a gigs for a while and it always gets a great reaction so it’s dropped on it’s own EP, finally!’ Rob told us. The boys’ satisfaction with their latest release appears to have been matched by the British public, judging by the sheer level of downloads. “It’s up there at number two on the iTunes charts! We’re blaming the fact that they dropped Nevermind by Nirvana to £3.99, otherwise we would have got number one!” Jed laughed. “But it’s all good; it’s only an EP and made it into the top 30, people like it we guess!”

She Wants is a statement of progression by the band. “I think that on this EP the tunes have a little bit more depth to them,” suggested Jed, “Disco Bands is a party tune, but I really like the sounds we’ve got on the track, She Wants because we’ve kept re-recording until we’ve got it right and it’s a really exciting sound. There’s a lot of space in it and because of that you really notice it when it comes on.”

When it comes to festivals, however, the band’s excitement reaches palpable levels. The guys have been travelling around a lot this summer, mostly recently hitting Glastonbury pretty hard. “We only had a few beers!” laughed Pete sarcastically. “We partied all weekend,” explained Rory, “and I lost my voice for a gig in Wales. Since then, we’ve been trying to take it easy. Glastonbury was a massive highlight.” However, when asked about Cornish surf and music festival Boardmasters, the interview disintegrated a bit into a collection of shared stories and drinking sessions. “We’re playing the main stage on Sunday evening, and we're nice and high on the bill. It could be one of the biggest crowds yet! We’ve got a lot of love down on the South coast and it’ll be good to catch with some mates and go surfing and stuff as well,” Rory explained with clear excitement. “It’s a bit like a home away from home because we started off playing surf towns because that’s where we had mates and it feels like we are going back to do that this weekend.” The Sunset Sons hype has got going abroad as well, with dedicated fans leading the chants at all hours of the day. Jed recalled, “We were at a festival in Valencia recently and were on at about two o’clock in the morning, thinking that no one would be there and we were absolutely blown away when the whole crowd joined in with the singing on the first two lines of ‘She Wants’!” A surreal moment for the band no doubt.

Sunset Son’s ability to create perfect summer tunes with their pop-rock melodies driven by Rory’s distinctively gruff vocals has garnered the attention of one of the biggest bands on the planet in Imagine Dragons who have invited them on tour. “The tour starts on the 6th October, and we’re playing the O2 arena on the 2nd and 3rd of November. We can’t wait because getting to play to massive arenas full of people who are really excited to have a night out, that’s perfect really isn’t it?” drummer Jed “We’ve got a big thank you to say to them when we meet them because they picked us themselves and we’ve heard that they’re great guys so we’re going to have some fun!”

Despite this success, the band are still devoted to their early fans in Hossegor and are determined to remain a part of that small community. “When we go back we get asked ‘Oh, are you going to playing a gig around here?’ and you feel bad saying no because that’s where it started for us but I think we are going to do one soon,” said Jed. “It’s funny, because if you go to Hossegor it’s this small beachside town and 85% of the people there ain’t got a clue what’s going on with the band so they’re asking “are you gonna come play in the pub!?” We're definitely going to try and put on a show for them.”

Sunset Son’s latest EP ‘She Wants’ is out now on iTunes. You can also catch them supporting Imagine Dragons on their upcoming European tour in October and November. Check out the new single 'She Wants' from the EP here.
