London’s Excel Centre isn’t exactly the first place you’d expect to see a line-up that reads like a Pitchfork best-of, but ATP is planning on doing exactly that this summer. Extending its heritage of taking on ambitious spaces and somehow pulling it all off, Jabberwocky looks set to inject a sense of musical delinquency into an otherwise drab arena, that usually feels more like an insipid cross between purgatory and an overcrowded airport check-in lounge.
Friday will see James Blake, Darkside, Thee Oh Sees, Kode9, Patten, Amen Dunes and Perfect Pussy, while among the biggest names on the Saturday are Neutral Milk Hotel, Caribou, Liars, Pissed Jeans, Electric Wizard, Jesu, Earth, Joanna Gruesome and Amsterdam’s anarcho-punk legends the Ex. Mutual Benefit, Jozef Van Wissem and Ben Frost have all just been freshly added to the lineup and there’s another surprise act to be announced in July.
Afterparties will follow at Hackney’s Shapes and the Ace Hotel, and are extended to all ticketholders, where Thee Oh Sees’ John Dwyer will play an additional show. If you’re stuck for a place to stay Ace Hotel is also offering specially packaged overnight deals for the full weekend.
Basically, Jabberwocky looks like it’ll reflect its nonsensical, poetic namesake: a collection of enviable artists playing in the South East’s preferred home to dull corporate affairs – that somehow promises to be pretty amazing in the end.
